The Nanaimo Art Gallery has
an ongoing call for submission and artists may submit to the gallery
at any time. The programming committee reviews submissions several
times a year and plans shows for all the galleries. Your submission
will be held until that committee meets. Our priority is to exhibit
work from Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. We will consider
work from across B.C. and Canada when the work fits our programming.
There will be specific calls for curatorial projects.
The Nanaimo Art Gallery is very interested in work that represents
the diversity of our community. We are also interested in curatorial
proposals.
Nanaimo Art Gallery has two locations. The Downtown gallery is located
in a beautiful storefront building on Commercial Avenue in the centre
of town. This location also houses our art rental and sales program.
The Campus gallery is located up the hill at Vancouver Island University.
There is a large L shaped gallery in the upper floor and a beautiful
intimate square space on the lower floor. The campus gallery shows
about 6 to 8 professional level CARFAC shows per year. We also show
the works of community and cultural groups and students/ faculty/
staff from Vancouver Island University.

What are we looking for in a submission? We are looking for work
that speaks about the members of our community on Vancouver Island
and the Gulf Islands. We are looking for bodies of work that explore
diverse viewpoints and subjects. We show all the usual media forms
including video, performance, and new media. We particularly like
work than involves extensions into the community through viewer
participation and interaction.

So you have decided to submit your work to the gallery. Congratulations!
Remember it’s a competitive art world and often takes
many attempts before you get a show. It’s easier to
show in a group show to get some experience in the gallery
world.
We are asking you to produce a lot of stuff to show us. The
list of 6 items you need for your submission package does
not have to be big and onerous. New artists often have limited
exhibition and educational experience. Not to fear! You can
keep your comments brief. Let's go through the material by
section.
Cover letter
Tell us who you are and what work you would like to show.
Be brief, half a page will do.
Artist statement
This is a short one page description of what you are interested
in the art world, what your art is about and why/how you make
it. One page maximum.
CV
Don't get worried about this one. Just tell us your
experience in the art world or classes you have taken.
CD of images.
More work gets rejected from galleries because the programming
committee could not see what was in the image. If the image
is dark or blurry, take it again. This is the material that
represents you so get really GOOD photographs. There should
be nothing in the background, just the work on (or in front
of) a white wall. If you know someone who is a good photographer
ask them to help you.
CD or Slide/ Print Guide
Tell us the title of the image, size, material, and the date.
Stamped and Self Addressed Return Envelope
Put your submission in a large envelope and enclose another
envelope addressed to your self with the same amount of postage
so we can return it to you. |
| SOME
ADVICE FOR NEW ARTISTS |
| |
Don’t apply blind. Visit both galleries to see the kinds
of work we show. Go to several shows so you can see the range
of work we show. Go to the openings and chat with the gallery
staff. Ask questions! Do you know the odds of getting a show?
Many artists mail out 20 submissions to get just one show.
Why? We just don’t have enough space, money, or staff
to show more than a fraction of the submissions we receive.
If you are not having any luck getting shows consider taking
an art class at Vancouver Island University. Classes are small,
friendly and supportive. All ages are represented. Course
offerings can be accessed on the website www.viu.ca.
Copies of the course calendar are available for viewing at
the advising centre in building 200 on the campus. If you
would like to take a course but find them expensive, a thrifty
alternative is to take a course as a Love of Learning student.
NAG also offers art classes. They are listed on this website.
One of the best ways to get into the gallery scene is to volunteer
at the gallery. We can use all kinds of different support
and you get to meet all the players and understand how the
system works. |
